Wisdom from The Wizard of Oz

Since L. Frank Baum published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz 125 years ago, this wisdom story about a girl who wants to go home and her unlikely companions has been re-told and reinterpreted many times on the page, stage, and screen. In this joyful service, we will celebrate this story (and the songs it inspired) and reflect on how communities change and retell older stories to meet their changing needs.

Before this service, folks are invited to read, watch, or listen to Wizard of Oz stories, including but not limited to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (1900 book), The Wizard of Oz (1939 film), The Wiz (1975 stage musical, 1978 film), and Wicked (1995 novel, 2003 stage musical, 2024 film). You are not expected to know all these stories – no quizzes, we promise! The service will be more meaningful if you know the basic plot points and characters.

Please join us on Zoom or in person! Services are normally held in the Commons and over Zoom at 10:45am. Sunday Services can be accessed over Zoom by following this link: https://uuma.zoom.us/j/5527667326 Or by calling 1-646-876-9923 and entering the code 552 766 7326 at the listed time.
