As our new church year begins, it seems a good time for a reminder on the benefits and functions of our People’s rain garden.
-to improve stormwater management because climate change means heavier, more concen-trated rainfall events and we need to reduce the amount of water going into storm drains;
-ecological restoration, by adding native plants that support bio-diversity (insects, birds, toads, etc.), sequester carbon in the soil, build soil health, help water filtrate into the groundwater sys-tem, and all those good things that lawns and pavement do not do;
-provide a venue for education about the ecological and climate benefits of rain gardens (and/or vernal pools).
We have had several planting/weeding sessions this summer, so you might notice a difference in the garden’s appearance. Please take time to stop by for a look!
