Our 2nd through 12th grade Religious Education classes are teaming with the Social Justice Coordinating Committee this month to fight the Illiteracy Horcrux. Our children and youth are using a social justice curriculum based on the Harry Potter books in which they learn about a new social justice issue each month and work on a related social justice project. They are currently working on a book drive for Lincoln School, and we would love for you and your family to participate.
We are asking People’s people to buy specific new books requested by Lincoln School for this book drive. We are partnering with Bookbug on Oakland Drive, and they are offering a discount and maintaining the list of what books have been purchased and what books we still need. You can participate either in person at Bookbug by asking for the list of books for the People’s Church Book Drive for Lincoln School, or by ordering online at http://www.bookbugkalamazoo.com/wishlist/55. If you order online, mark that you will pick the books up in the store and someone from the Social Justice committee will gather them. Bookbug is offering a 15% discount for books purchased for this book drive. Just enter the code LINCOLN in the space available online, or give the code to the Bookbug employee at the store.
We are also asking People’s children to help us by making bookmarks to go with the books. We have card stock cut to the appropriate size available in the Kids’ Room before and after church. Please have your kids go to the Kids’ Room (Room 12) before service each Sunday, and ask them if they are willing to help us by decorating bookmarks. We have some amazing artists among our children and youth, and we’d love to see bookmarks that will be treasured by the children who receive them. We hope to purchase 320 books, so we have a lot of bookmarks to make!
We will start fighting the Environmental Horcrux the last week of April.
