Thank you to our middle school and high school youth, who made 36 scarves for Ministry With Community! We appreciate their hard work.

Fighting social justice “horcruxes” is part of the Harry Potter social justice curriculum our 2nd through 12th graders are using in their religious education classes this year. Our horcrux this month has been poverty, and we have been fighting that horcrux by helping Ministry With Community and local refugee families.

The whole church participated in a special collection for Ministry With Community this past Sunday, Dec. 11, and together we raised  $1,076, even with low attendance due to a winter storm.

This Sunday, December 18, will be the last week our religious education curriculum will focus on the poverty horcrux. We are requesting donations of the following for Ministry With Community as part of this project:

  • Deodorant (travel size)
  • Lotion (travel size)
  • Shampoo (travel size)
  • Soap (travel size)
  • Conditioner (travel size)
  • Feminine products
  • Toothbrushes
  • Lip balm
  • Shaving cream
  • 2-bladed razors

This is a good opportunity for families to work together to do social justice work. Parents can have children pick out a few items from the list while shopping, and bring those items with them to church this Sunday.

Our youth will also serve lunch at Ministry With Community on December 17 and December 24.

We have collected a large number of winter coats and other warm winter gear for Kalamazoo-area refugee families! Thank you to everyone who has shown such great generosity while our RE program and Social Justice Committee have worked together with our whole church community to fight poverty in the Kalamazoo area.
