Spring Adopt-A-Highway

The Green Sanctuary Committee of People’s Church is pleased to announce that we will be returning to 10th Street as our Adopt-A-Highway project this year. Our tentative plan is to hold our first clean-up along 10th street from People’s Church to West Main (M-43) on Sunday, April 19. If there are more than 8 volunteers, we will extend along 10th Street to the North. All gear and material will be provided. There will be a safety training scheduled prior to the work detail and MDOT safety rules will be strictly observed. Approval of our request is pending at the Kalamazoo County Road Commission. More information will be forthcoming via the Friday blast as well as by direct e-mail for those who have indicated their interest. Youth are encouraged to volunteer, but parental permission is required for those from 12 to 17 years old. Please let Cybelle Shattuck (scybelle@umich.edu) or Allan Hunt (hahunt@gmail.com) know if you can help out.

Palmer Memorial Nature Sanctuary

Palmer Memorial SanctuaryOn Saturday, March 21, a volunteer crew of 13 People’s people spent a delightful afternoon clearing invasive Glossy Buckthorn from the 22-acre Edwin and Margaretta Palmer Memorial Sanctuary on Paw Paw Lake in Texas Township. In addition to the fabulous fellowship and outdoor time, we found an endangered Spotted Turtle in the prairie fen. Our guide from the Michigan Nature Association reported that he had never seen one before! Stay tuned as there will be more opportunities to get acquainted with this precious slice of nature in the future.
