OCTOBER 10th Special Collection

Our October 10th Special Collection will be for Afghan Asylum Seekers Resettlement. Bethany Christian Services and Samaritas, the two resettlement agencies in our area, will receive the funds. Funds will be used to support the families and individuals that will be arriving in the next few weeks to help pay for food and cash assistance.

Resettlement of Afghan Asylum Seekers—WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP?

Our Social Justice Coordinating Committee has been made aware of the possible need for churches to partner in sponsorship with resettlement agencies in our area to help with resettlement of Afghan asylum seekers that will be coming to Kalamazoo soon. It was five years ago this summer that People’s Church sponsored the Altyara family when they arrived from Syria. Our local resettlement agencies have been notified that there will be as many as 150 people from Afghanistan that will need to be resettled in our area. Our church has agreed to receive household items and store them through the end of September. The Commons is filled with the generous household donations that have been brought to the church!

In order to access whether we have the capacity to help resettle an Afghan family through a co-sponsor role, we will need volunteers who are willing and able to serve on a resettlement committee. If you think you might be interested, please contact Ann Feldmeier at feldtrow@aol.com.

Another important way you can help is to make a financial donation. Since the Afghans arriving will not have refugee status from our government— they will be considered asylees, they will not be eligible for cash or food assistance from the State of Michigan.  There is a great need for monetary donations. We will be holding our Second Sunday Special Collection to benefit the resettlement of the Afghan asylum seekers that will be arriving in the near future.
