September Start Up
And the cycle of the year turns yet again as it’s time for a new church year to begin. This begins my 19th year serving as your religious education director. We just completed our summer RE Committee retreat and I’m excited to have an enthusiastic and energetic group of folks serving our congregation in religious growth and faith development.
If you are new to People’s Church—Welcome!
If you have been coming for a while—Welcome Back!
If you have been attending all summer—Happy Fall!
As summer moves into autumn, I am cognizant of how the more spacious pace of summer often speeds up to a much faster pace in the fall. In an effort to ensure that our RE committee and our RE program is serving our congregation’s most important needs in terms of religious growth and learning, I’ve asked this year’s RE committee to question all that we do and how we do it. After so many years in the same position, it is easy to get caught up in “this is how we do things” mentality and I want to move away from that.
Everyone I talk to these days has a very full plate with more than enough to do. I want to ensure that the time and energy volunteers devote to our programs are spent doing the most important things that tie directly into our church mission and vision.
We desire to create safe spaces for our children, youth and adults to learn, grow, question and explore together. We do this within the container of a Unitarian Universalist faith community which affirms each person and allows for a diverse expression of various beliefs and ideas.
In the RE team, we strive to balance opportunities for religious growth with those for making connections and deepening relationships within our congregation.
I hope that all of you will find plenty of opportunities for connection at People’s Church as well as chances to nourish your spirit!
Diane Melvin, Religious Education Director
