Diane Melvin (Big)Youth Activities

Tis the season for UU youth conferences in the Heartland. Last month People’s Church hosted a young adult conference (or Con) for 60 people between 18-35 who gathered here from as far away as Denver and Boston. We sent a dozen middle schoolers to Indianapolis to attend a youth con there the same weekend.

On February 19-21, our high school group is hosting and leading a district middle school con at People’s Church called CONspriacy: Seeking Truth. All 6th, 7th & 8th graders are encouraged check out more information and the registration link at: http://peopleschurch.net/news/conspiracy-seeking-truth-middle-school-con-feb-19-21/

Ten of our high school youth and their adult sponsors are working hard to earn enough funds to be able to attend the Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly (GA) in Columbus, OH this June.

The theme for GA 2016 will be Heart Land: Where Faiths Connect. The world is increasingly multi-faith. The labels—Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, theist and non-theist—no longer define who or what we love, or how spirit moves in our lives. General Assembly 2016 will assemble leaders and communities of many faiths to worship together, learn from one another, and create a new vision of faith that no longer divides us, but connects us to an interdependent future that works for all.

Attending this five-day gathering of thousands of UUs is a great opportunity to connect our youth to the larger UU community for a chance to learn and grow together.  Participation in worship, the youth caucus and social justice action with 5,000 other UUs is an empowering experience. Our hope is that these experiences will deepen their faith as well as their identity with Unitarian Universalism.

Their approach to raising funds for this trip is multi-faceted. Our hope is that the congregation will be willing to support their efforts to earn their way. Please check out the following ideas and note where you can use their services and support them.

Thank you!

Blessed Be, Diane Melvin, Religious Education Director
