I am thankful to all that is good in this world for summertime. I so appreciate the less hectic pace at church during the summer months! This summer I am taking a break and making time to rejuvenate my spirit before heading into the new church year.
Rest and spiritual renewal for me includes time for a daily meditation practice, regular time in nature whether it is hiking in the woods or working in my garden, and this summer it has included a regular work out schedule at the gym. I’ve also enjoyed having time for reading, writing and art. I can feel my depleted coffers filling back up by taking some time away to relax and renew.
The real highlight of my summer has been adopting two kittens. Their shenanigans keep me amused and working with Bo on not chasing them keeps me on my toes. Mostly, I feel so much gratitude for the slower pace combined with fewer demands and time to enjoy this beautiful Michigan weather.
I hope that each of you are also finding ways to renew your spirits this summer as well.
Blessed Be, Diane Melvin, Religious Education Director
Gearing up for a Great Year in RE
The Religious Education Committee will be meeting for a full day retreat in August to plan and prepare for another fun and engaging year in the RE program at People’s Church.
Last year’s curriculum committee did a great job choosing and preparing curriculum for each class for the coming year. We will be using different Tapestry of Faith Curricula this year than we did last year.
You are welcome to follow the link and check out the classes we are offering this year if you are interested at http://www.uua.org/re/tapestry/children
Preschool – Chalice Children
Kindergarten/1st Grade – Love Surrounds Us
2nd/3rd Grade – Love Will Guide Us
4th Grade and 5th Grade classes – Toolbox of Faith
6th Grade – Riddle and Mystery
Our 7th and 8th grade class will be engaged in Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education curricula this year. If you are new to People’s and have a 7th or 8th grader who may be interested in attending this excellent class please let me know at email@example.com.
The 9-12th grade class will be starting the year with Popcorn Theology where they will watch clips of popular movies and then participate in activities and engaging discussions of highlighted points. In the winter this class will participate in the 12 week high school OWL sessions followed by some possible visits to other churches and temples in the area.
Seeking RE Teachers and Assistants
While we have a great roster of classes and an enormous number of participants, what we are lacking is enough adults to guide our children and youth in their RE classes this year. It definitely takes a village and right now some villagers are needed to heed the call!
Must be open to a Very Rewarding and Enjoyable Experience with Phenomenal Kids! At this time, TEN more people are needed to teach or assist in the elementary classrooms this year. Training and mentoring are provided. Team Teachers alternate Sundays and set their own schedules. Please let Diane Melvin know if you are interested at firstname.lastname@example.org.
RE Teacher Training is September 4th from noon to 4:00p.m.
