Artist Statement: During the past 35 years, my wife Ardyce and I have visited Alaska and the northern arctic many times, driving our camper van literally to the ends of roads in North America and Europe and sometimes flying even farther.  But to the Antarctic Peninsula, one travels by ship; and to the interior of that remote continent only under scientific sponsorship.

Three decades in the Far North have shown us dramatic effects of climate change as well as the impact of human activities.  We have noticed glaciers receding into valleys, experienced the desolation of devastated forests, and observed oily muck clinging to once-pristine shorelines.

As National Park Service seasonal rangers, we have tried to inspire visitors to be aware of the natural beauty surrounding them and to help keep it that way for their own children and grandchildren.
