The committee has been working since July, 2019, on reviewing and revising the constitution document of The People’s Church. The process has been thorough, but the pandemic has slowed our efforts somewhat, as we switched to a virtual meeting format in April of 2020.  We have studied the current constitution carefully and have proposed edits based on our Peoples’ Mission and Vision statements, as well as current practices.

Completion of the first review, along with input from the board, occurred in the months of December and January. We are now further reviewing the document and preparing to hold informational sessions and receive input from the congregation, which will be instrumental in developing the final document that will shape and guide People’s.

Our plan is to present specific topics of the document in separate meetings to be held at a variety of times and venues.  Initially they will be virtual, but there is hope that we will be able to have in-person meetings available in the summer, as well.

Some of the predominant changes are in these categories:

  • Congregational meetings and voting:  modifying procedures to allow for a virtual format for viewing meetings, in addition to in-person congregational meetings (when practical again), and developing a voting procedure that includes electronic methods, as well as mail-in ballots and in-person votes;
  • Membership requirements:  doing away with “supporting and non-supporting members;” defining responsibilities of members as a contribution of time, energy, talent and or financial well-being of our beloved community;
  • Commitment to Equity:  including a new article which expresses beautifully our commitment to being a just and inclusive organization;

It is our hope we can call a special meeting in the fall of 2021 for our members to vote on the proposed revisions.  We are hoping to start virtual informational meetings in April.  Our regular committee meetings are held on the second Tuesdays of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 and are always open to members to listen in.  For more information or to join a meeting, please contact Shari Harris at sharonharris615@gmail.com or Brian Lewis at rustic289@gmail.com.
