The Green Sanctuary Committee, along with the Michigan Nature Association, is sponsoring a hike through parts of the Palmer Sanctuary on Sunday, August 19. The hike will be led by a Michigan Nature Association naturalist, and is sure to be a great time. Following a bring-your-own sack lunch after the Sunday service, we will carpool to the sanctuary near Schoolcraft. The hike will be from 1-3pm.
This nature sanctuary was the property of Edwin (former minister of People’s Church) and Margarita Palmer. It includes woods and a prairie fen. Fens are fascinating wetlands that provide homes to rare plant and animal species.
Our hike will begin with a walk down a slope, through mature trees, and into the fen. Most of the hike is on level land, but there are no trails. To fully enjoy and appreciate this experience, please bring the following: sunscreen, insect repellant, long pants, hat, water, sunglasses, and waterproof boots (knee-high work best). You can expect to get muddy!
