The Edwin and Margarita Palmer Nature Sanctuary preserves a rare prairie fen wetland on land formerly owned by Rev. Palmer of People’s Church. It is managed by the Michigan Nature Association.

Goal: remove invasive buckthorn so native plants can thrive.

We will trek about ¼ mile down a hill and into the fen area, where we will use hand clippers to cut buckthorn stems and then treat the stumps with herbicide. Youth are welcome and encouraged to participate with parental supervision.

Recommended supplies:
• Mud/snow boots and winter clothing
• Work gloves
• A water bottle and energy-sustaining snack
• Tools will be provided, but extra clippers are useful

The Palmer Memorial Sanctuary is on the northeast edge of Paw Paw Lake, just south
of Schoolcraft. A group will meet at the church at 10:30AM to carpool to the sanctuary.
